I personal financial milestone I still have a long way until the boat is ready and I cast off into the sun set. What Is Barista FIRE? "Fire" stands for "Financial Independence Retire Early" It's about having enough or just slightly enough for passive income to pay your core expenses. For me this is just £220 because I don't really live anywhere and my marina fees are £200 and my phone is £20. But That's now between working for event companies who put me in hotels, give me fuel card food subs.....when I'm working. But that's not all the time. I'm also a minimalist all my cloths fit in a suite case and for now I drive a 2009 car (written 2025) which I go car camping. I also help my folks out and sofa surf at theirs which can be frustrating but renting is expensive and I'm not in one spot for long. Then I stay on the boat. But this is how I have managed to build the passive income.
Main income - Working I earn an income through my work in the events industry, although it's not always consistent. I try to take on jobs as often as possible, but the nature of the events world is seasonal and unpredictable . With a large number of people competing for the same roles, wages have been driven down , making it more challenging to rely on steady pay. The high turnover in event offices also makes it difficult to build long-term professional relationships, as many roles are now filled by short-term interns . In addition to my event work, I also generate income through dividends  and various online revenue streams .
My Investment Income from my wage
My Stocks and shares ISA's hold dividend paying funds, which I have paid out to help with day to day cost that is my roller coast income.
Monthly paying Sterling Short-Term Money Market Fund. (VUTY) USD Treasury Bond ETF Distributing
Quarterly paying funds (3 months) (VUKE) FTSE 100 (VHYL) All-World High Dividend Yield (VUSA) US Equity Index Fund.
My Online Income Amazon - My Store link My YouTube channel features a lot of car maintenance videos, boat life vlog style, car camping and have a semi off grid set up with solar and batteries which I use at home. If people use my links I get a small amount of commission. It's really not much but at the If you choose to shop through the affiliate links  I share, I earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. On average, I make around £20 per month, which I usually redeem as Amazon vouchers —reinvesting in tools and gear for new car projects, or occasionally treating myself to coffee or gin . My YouTube Channel My channel began as a hobby during a tough time—after a breakup and with little work on hand, I started fixing my car and filming the process. It was a way to stay productive and share DIY car repair tips  that could help others save money, just as I was doing myself. In the beginning, I uploaded around 30–40 videos, most of which received fewer than 500 views. Everything changed when I uploaded a video titled “How Much Did My Boat Cost – 4 Years of Ownership.”  YouTube’s algorithm picked it up, and within two weeks, it had over 50,000 views. Although it didn’t earn money at the time, it helped me hit the subscriber and watch time milestones needed for monetization . Which is 1000 subs and 4000 hours of watch time. YouTube success isn’t just about quality content or interesting stories—it’s also luck . Most of my videos still get under 500 views, with a few hitting into the thousands. A great example is my boat tour videos . I’ve uploaded five tours, all filmed with the same style, same format, and same camera: a walkthrough from bow to stern, inside and out, followed by a short interview with the owner. One of those videos took off and hit 47,000 views. The others? Less than 4,000—one even stalled at just 1,000 views, despite me thinking it would perform best. I enjoy making the boat tours—they’re interesting and resonate with viewers. I also continue doing car repair tutorials  both to help others and to cut my own costs. With both types of content, my long-term goal is to build consistent views  through search. After all, changing an oil filter today is the same as it was five years ago, and people interested in alternative living  or shopping for boats will always be searching for that kind of content. The channel makes me around £100 Over all my income fluctuates Wages depend on job dates and rates. My dividend income depends on companies ability to pay out, My amazon store depends if people use the links and my channel depends on viewing times. Expenses. I'm trying to keep my cost low I know I will use my laptop and coffee machine a lot throughout the day and I use power all the time so I invested in a portable PowerStation. Mainly for the boat as I drive to and from the marina it's on charge in my car which I use for car camping and a mobile office. While it's stationary it's charging via solar depending on what time of the year it is. I think the best way to be financially independent is to use available technology as a loop hole. Invest up front to cut your bills with money and income they can tax and freeze it. Your bills they can increase them and you kind of don't have a choice so to hedge yourself on something like the setup I have may help in the long run. If you enjoyed the article perhaps buy yourself a drink via my Amazon store.
Or perhaps just help out with a donation.

One of the most popular sailing boat tours so far on my YouTube Channel has been this Nauticat 33 motorsailer owned by Jimmy. We take a look around the classic and beautifully crafted 1984 Nauticat 33 Ketch-Rigged Motor Sailer, 'WildCat'. The 1984 Nauticat 33  is a classic motor sailor , well-regarded for its robust build quality, seaworthiness, and comfortable accommodations. Built by Siltala Yachts  in Finland, the Nauticat 33 has been a popular choice among cruising enthusiasts, especially those seeking a vessel suitable for extended voyaging in a variety of conditions. Overview Make/Model:  Nauticat 33 Builder:  Siltala Yachts, Finland Year:  1984 Type:  Motor Sailer Construction:  Fiberglass hull with teak trim Length Overall (LOA):  Approximately 10.1 meters (33 feet) Beam:  3.25 meters (10.7 feet) Draft:  1.5 meters (4.9 feet) Displacement:  Around 9,000 kg (19,800 lbs) Engine:  Typically equipped with a Ford Lehman or similar diesel engine (~80-90 HP) Design and Layout The Nauticat 33 has a distinctive pilothouse design , allowing for all-weather sailing and excellent visibility from the helm. It features dual steering positions — one inside the pilot house and one outside in the cockpit — offering flexibility depending on weather and sea conditions. Interior: Warm, traditional teak interior  with ample woodwork Spacious saloon  with panoramic windows Full galley with stove, sink, and refrigeration Two separate cabins (forward V-berth and aft cabin) Enclosed head with shower Plenty of storage throughout Cockpit & Deck: Solid teak decks (on many models) High freeboard and solid handrails for safety Ketch rig (mainmast and mizzen), though some later models were rigged as sloops or cutters Easy access to the side decks Performance As a motor sailer, the Nauticat 33 is not designed for speed , but rather for comfort and reliability. She motors efficiently and sails adequately, particularly on a reach. The large diesel engine makes long-range motoring or motoring through calms very manageable. While upwind performance under sail alone is limited compared to a pure sailing yacht, many owners report that with proper sail trim and the right conditions, the boat handles confidently. Strengths Excellent for long-distance cruising  and liveaboard  use Sturdy, Nordic construction  with a full keel Well-protected pilothouse  makes it ideal for colder climates Versatile in varied weather due to both engine and sail capability Comfortable, traditional interior with high-quality woodwork Considerations Not as nimble or fast under sail as modern sailboats Some models may have aging systems (electrical, plumbing, rigging) that need upgrades Teak decks, if original, may require attention Conclusion The 1984 Nauticat 33 is a tried-and-true vessel that appeals to those who value comfort, safety, and versatility  over speed. It remains a popular choice among sailors who cruise extensively or live aboard full time, especially in Northern Europe and North America. If well-maintained, a Nauticat 33 can offer decades of dependable service and adventure on the water.

The Journey Sailing for approximately one month, our journey unfolded on an Endurance 37 monohull full keel sailboat. Departing from #Cardiff, we sailed in the company of a small group of boats to #Oxwich Bay. While our companions turned back, we continued our expedition to #Lundy, where we explored the surroundings and indulged in a memorable swim with seals to the north of the island. Fueled by perfect conditions and a few celebratory beers, we pressed on to #Padstow, spending several days in the charming harbor town. Our adventure continued to the enchanting #IslesofScilly, often referred to as the Caribbean of England, situated just 28 miles off the UK coast. Island-hopping became our routine as we explored StMarys, #Tresco, StMartins, Bryher,StAgnes, and Samson. The return journey mirrored our path in reverse, with a detour to St Ives and a skip past Lundy and Oxwich. Instead, we dropped anchor in the picturesque village of Clovelly.
Longest by distance Embarking on a delivery journey from Hayling Island to Cardiff, as a group of friends we helped bring back our friends #BroadBlue38 catamaran, completing the trip in four days. Leaving around 10 pm, we opted for the south side of the Isle of Wight. A pitstop in #Falmouth due to poor weather conditions, and during our stay, we indulged in a pub crawl. Continuing our journey, we anchored near Newquay, taking advantage of the time to wait for the tide to turn. A visit to introduced an unexpected turn of events, with the possibility of being left alone on the journey. Some of our crew had work commitments, and one member departed to fulfill duties on freight ships. Most of the crew opted to call in sick for their jobs. Throughout the coastal passage, our route was accompanied by a mix of dolphins and birds, adding a touch of natural beauty to our delivery adventure.
Longest on my boat. As highlighted in the video, my journey with boat ownership has been a constant struggle between health and wealth. Just before acquiring my boat, I faced a challenging incident. While en route to work, I encountered a car accident where a vehicle hit the highway barrier and ended up in the middle lane facing the wrong direction. Acting quickly, I used my van as a shield, rescued the person from the car, but unfortunately, a lorry collided with the van, subsequently hitting me. Despite saving someone's life, I found myself in the unfortunate position of being run over. The challenges continued during lockdowns, as being an agency worker meant receiving only £10 a month. Post-lockdown, I underwent a knee operation, adding to the difficulties I faced. Considering these hardships, it was surprising as I mapped out the distances covered – from Cardiff to Lundy, Clovelly, Watchet, and back to Cardiff. Additionally, I made a few trips to Bristol and Oxwich Bay and engaged in some day sailing in the BayArea.
 A glimpse of boat life.

I work as an agency worker mainly in events. The jobs are last minute, When I started in 2010 I was earning double the minimum wage/ £10ph. Now 2024 it's only £12! I do the work as it's different all the time and there is no commitment. Prior to owning the boat my year would be Jan-April back packing in affordable countries. Summer work on road shows and festivals and winter time work in department stores selling say coffee machines or activity days.

I recently worked at the motorhome, camping and caravan show. I took a quick look around and filmed as much as I could. There is a big cross over with #Boatlife Vs #Vanlife lots of off grid systems. I would like a van as boating is great in the summer and you can really get off grid away from people.

It's not an adventure unless something goes wrong!
(I make videos for a hobby, This is how I cleaned my fuel tank)

Here is the video, below is the description and tools links. I hope you enjoy.
 Storytime......
In short we crashed the boat into a wall, It's not just because I'm not very good. But we had a couple of days motor sailing around 100 miles with no problem, engine started ect no problem. On the way into a harbor both the wind and wave pushing us in. Shifted the boat into neutral engine cut out, The entrance was on our left / port side and there's a big wall as it dries out. We got in any who clogged filter. I do use a product called Marine 16 which is a diesel bug/fuel treatment that is recommended by many.

I do use marine 16. As part of my regular service, I also now clean the fuel tank at the start of the year.

The "fuel polisher" I came across a simple DIY fuel polisher online and made my own, Pretty easy to assemble . All that's required for ongoing maintenance is changing the filters. The entire setup cost me around £150. Now it's made I only need to replace filters.
It's important to note that this device isn't a professional-grade cleaner; it's purpose is to remove a small amount of dirt and debris from the bottom of the tank as part of routine servicing. It's not equipped to resolve significant issues or handle heavy contamination. You may also need to replace gaskets on inspection hatches on the fuel tank.

 How to make #FuelPolisher.
In order from fuel in to fuel out. 1. Semi-rigid pipe (this will go into the fuel tank) I used speed-fit pipe designed for plumbing.
 2. Fuel hose
 3. In-line civ/large filter
 4. Fuel hose
 5. Main filter I used a copy version of a Racor 500 from Amazon.
 6. Fuel hose
 7. Hand pump primer (to prime the line and fill the filters(not pictured here)
 8. Fuel hose
 9. Fuel 12v transfer pump (to connect to the battery and circulate the fuel- An arrow will be on the polisher for flow, you want that going away from the filters back into the tank)
 10. Fuel hose.

You basically put everything in the order listed above. With the exception of the main filter and the 12v pump. Everything else can be loose/not attached as you will be moving/swapping filters later.

 How to use the #DIYFuelPolisher
 In order.
 1. Open up the fuel tank hatch.(careful to lift out the sensor)
 2. Place the semi-rigged hose into the lowest part of the tank. Do not stir at this point as the majority of gunk will be sat at the lowest point of the tank.
 3. Place the final end of the hose into the tank near the top.
 4. Use the hand pump primer to get things going (or fill the main filter with diesel, this is what I did originally however since writing this I brought the hand pump)
 5. Attach the 12v pump to the house battery bank (Connect the to battery, positive then negative, then reverse to take off)
 6. Switch on the pump and let the fuel cycle through the filters.
 7. It's up to you to judge how long to leave the pump running, depending on how much gunk you have in the tank or how bit it is.

I then service my engine. Oil change etc I tend to clean the fuel in March/April time which is when my engine will be running more (moving the boat). I sometimes cut my filters open to see what the score is.

 Results below
Here is the first filter collecting all the big bits (black dots).
Parts used the main list is at the top click here to go back up with links for US and EU
Clicking pictures will take you to the UK amazon page.

The copy of the Racor 500 filter the quality is pretty decent. The filter can handle 227L/H of fuel.

The diesel fuel transfer pump I used came with 12v can transfer 45 L/min and is self priming. It's a fast pump but with lots of fuel hose there is enough inefficiencies in the line.

Webasto Diesel Heater timelapse is a short video or photographic sequence that showcases the strip down and rebuild of the d5000 heater. Designed to help you see how easy and straightforward a glow plug replacement is. You only need basic tools. Above: Webasto Diesel Heater: Glow Plug Replacement Made Easy | Enjoy the Satisfying Rebuild Time-Laps!

These heaters enjoy widespread popularity in automotive and marine applications, delivering efficient and dependable heating through the use of diesel fuel. The heater we utilized on our boat was the #Airtop #d5000 model, which came as part of the original boat equipment. The Airtop models in this range share a similar design, ensuring consistent performance. The time-lapse video typically captures significant moments, including the initial setup, the connection of the heater to the vehicle or vessel's fuel source and electrical system, and the heater's operation, generating warm air and maintaining a comfortable environment. On this occasion, it marked the second time I serviced the heater. I had previously purchased a service kit for my d5000, which included the middle section, a new glow plug, burner tube, and mesh. This kit cost approximately £350. I want to clarify that I have no affiliation with butlertechnik. I simply stumbled upon their eBay store and website, and I found their customer service to be quite satisfactory.

 Webasto Exploded diagram.
However, the Webasto parts are pretty expensive (for me this is a week's pay!).
The time-lapse video was shot during the subsequent winter. We found ourselves replacing the glow plug once more due to a burnt cable. The task itself is relatively straightforward, but the high cost of replacement parts made it a bit of an investment. A few months down the line, I made the decision to swap out the heater for an inexpensive Chinese diesel heater that I purchased on Amazon for £100. Surprisingly, it performed quite decently. If you were to place it side by side with the original expensive heater and remove the outer casing, you'd be hard-pressed to distinguish between the two. In the realm of marketing, there's a concept known as "premium price association," where you tend to assume that a higher price equates to a better product. However, that's not always the case. My primary goal is to replace the Chinese heater with something better next year, preferably one that can also heat hot water while running. Staying warm is a priority, especially in the UK, where we experience four seasons in a day. Transitioning from the Webasto heater to the Chinese one was a fairly straightforward process. I utilized the same mounting brackets and exhaust system. As for the electrical connections, I essentially spliced the wires and used the existing Webasto cables, connecting them to the new heater. If I remember correctly, there were three cables from the d5000 heater. The Chinese heater also came with a remote control, claiming to be a 5kw version, although I have my doubts about that. My boat is a Sun Odyssey 40, and you can check out a tour of it via this link . I also replaced the fuel pump from the original Webasto with the one that came with the Chinese heater. The Webasto had a 20-amp car fuse directly linked to the battery, while the Chinese heater used a 15-amp fuse, which I also swapped for the lower-rated one. So far, I've been using the heater for approximately 2 months, with the longest continuous use being 5 hours. I make sure to turn it off before going to bed, so it doesn't run overnight. Initially, there was some smoke, which is a normal occurrence, as they apply an oil-based protective film during storage, and this residue burns off. I should mention that I have friends who have made the switch to these heaters without any issues. However, someone did caution me that swapping them out might void the insurance on your boat, so it's advisable to check with your insurance provider before making the switch.

2023 was shaping up to be a promising year. I had the beginning of the year scheduled for a nice 6-week campaign with an electric car company, offering more substantial pay compared to my usual agency gigs. I could visualize it all – finally paying off my boat, getting all the #Garmin #sailpack upgrades in place, and completing the solar installation. Back in December 2022, when the agency booked me, my 2009 Insignia with 143k miles on the clock needed some attention. It was essentially held together with duct tape and hope. After investing in new tires, a clutch replacement, DPF flush, oil change, and various other repairs, I found myself a thousand pounds lighter. Additionally, I had purchased a new mainsail for the summer, opting for #HydeSails at a cost of £1800. I could already picture my wife sunbathing in a bikini on the deck, reading a book, while I pottered around the boat. Sounds amazing, right? Seizing the Moment The campaign was initially scheduled for December 2022, and everything seemed set. It was set to kick off in mid-January. After receiving the booking forms, I contacted the mechanic and went ahead with the sail purchase. The plan was simple – between my Christmas job and the EV gig, I'd pay off the remaining loan balance I had used to buy the boat and cover the mooring fees for the year (a total of £2k). It meant I might not have much money left, but I would be free from debt and fixed expenses. I've always been the type to pay for everything in advance, which is why I drive an older car—it's the one I could afford, having purchased it for £2k with 90k miles on it two years ago. I do a lot of driving! Hitting the First Roadblock Just a week before the campaign was set to begin, it was #cancelled! Agencies typically don't offer any compensation when they cancel bookings. With no alternative bookings in sight and rapidly dwindling funds, I scrambled for work but could only secure three half-days in January. From then until August, I've struggled to find an average of only 2 days of work per month, depleting my savings rapidly. On top of this, living costs have risen, making it even more challenging. Many event companies now pay just slightly above the minimum wage, including holiday pay in the rate. End of an Era Unfortunately, after 5 years of being with my significant other, we decided to part ways. This is heart-wrenching not only from an emotional perspective but also due to the practical implications. We shared experiences, and the cost of marinas, fuel, and food will change significantly. Turning the Tide As they say, the tides change, and so does the situation. The weather this summer in the UK has been less than ideal for sailing. Some of my sailing buddies either went for day sails or braved the foul weather. On the home front, I managed to secure a few more gigs while temporarily staying with my parents. With just four more paychecks, I should be debt-free! I'm looking forward to that. Upcoming Boat Projects With no outstanding debts this winter, I plan to tackle several projects, including the exciting task of installing a #electricmarinetoilet and holding tank. I'm also aiming to obtain my day skipper certification, considering I've owned the yacht for 5 years now and it's about time I learn how to use it properly. I'll be documenting these projects on my YouTube channel @SerenityCoastUK. Light-Hearted Humor Lately, I've been jokingly telling people that I'm like a solar panel. I only seem to work efficiently in the sunshine, and my efficiency drops to 22%. Moreover, if it gets too hot, I'm not at my best. A Message for My Followers If you've been following me on social media (links below), you might have noticed my recent absence. The reasons mostly mirror what I've shared above. I'm going through a challenging period right now, just trying to make ends meet. Speaking of making ends meet, if you can help out, there's a donation link below. Every penny counts! Boat maintenance, fuel, marinas, and other expenses add up. As you may have seen in my previous post about my accident, I've received no income support from any agencies or the government, despite having worked since I was 16. This lack of support has significantly slowed down my adventure plans. I have aspirations to add a solar arch and take a few training courses.

2023 Cancelled.

Additionally, I'll be showing you how to make the best shakshuka. #boatlife #owningaboat Owning a yacht was never a part of my dreams, and I had zero experience in sailing. My story begins with a thwarted mortgage application, setting me on a path toward alternative living. The UK is currently grappling with a housing crisis, where affordability becomes increasingly challenging each year due to rising interest rates and soaring property prices. The shortage of housing in the UK is exacerbated by overregulation and the constant influx of cash from institutional and overseas investors, driving up demand while supply remains limited. Surprisingly, only 3% of the UK is developed. As someone who didn't qualify for a mortgage, I want to share the story of how I came to own this ideal and affordable liveaboard sailboat. Behind the wheel of a van, I swiftly positioned it to block the wreckage. Without hesitation, I rushed out and pulled the individual from the mangled car. Within moments, a loud collision echoed as a lorry forcefully struck the van, propelling it forward and subsequently impacting us. The van, which had acted as a protective barrier, forced us to the side. Had it not been for the van shielding us, the truck might have plowed through the car, leading to a tragic outcome.
