How to get better MPG - with fuel prices climbing, every mile matters. Curent diesel price in the UK is about £2 a litre! You don't need to make huge changes to get better fuel economy—just a few maintenance tips and smarter habits can make a big difference. Here are four key areas to focus on, with practical tips and what you can expect.

FUEL ADDATIVE! TYRES! Maintaining the correct tyre pressure can improve your fuel efficiency by up to 3% to 3.3% compared to driving on under-inflated tyres. Tyres naturally lose about 1 to 2 PSI per month (and even more during seasonal temperature drops), an unchecked vehicle can easily run 5 to 6 PSI under-inflated without looking "flat" to the naked eye. When buying new tyres I always go either A for grip & A for fuel efficiency depending on cost. At the very least I go to B however I am a high milage driver...... unless your my car insurance in this case I keep my car locked in an under ground bunker and never drive it ;-) Air filter and MAF Sensor Ever feel like your car is losing its punch, idling roughly, or gulping down too much fuel? The fix might be as simple as helping your engine breathe.
🌬️ The Air Filter: The Engine's Lungs
Your engine air filter stops road dust, dirt, and debris from getting sucked into your engine. Over time, it gets choked with grime. Changing it restores your acceleration, protects your engine cylinders from severe wear, and prevents your engine from suffocating.
🧠 The MAF Sensor: The Engine's Brain
The Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor sits right past the filter. It uses a delicate, heated wire to measure exactly how much air is entering the engine so your car knows exactly how much fuel to inject. When microscopic dust or oil coats this sensor, it goes "blind," leading to engine stutters, misfires, and dashboard Check Engine lights.
🛠️ The Ultimate Two-Minute Fix
Don't just change the filter—clean the sensor too! Whenever you swap out a dirty air filter, grab a can of dedicated MAF Sensor Cleaner I use the Liqui Moly MAF Sensor Cleaner and give the sensor a quick spray. I do have a video on this.
Pro-tip: Never use brake cleaner or touch the delicate wires with your fingers. Let it air dry, pop it back in, and enjoy a smoother, more efficient ride!
CHANGE YOUR OIL! CHANGE YOUR OIL!
I change my oil every 6 months, typically in March and September. This is mainly due to weather changes, so it's drier and cooler. No one likes working when it's too hot or raining sideways! Plus, my MOT is in October, so turning up with a nicely serviced working car is always good!
For this, I use Shell Helix Professional oil. Changing your oil is probably one of the best things you can do! Buying a good tool kit and jack stands for the job is key. But once you have them, you have them forever, so don't cheap out. Use the link at the top of the screen to see my tool set.
