RENOGY ShadowFlux 200w Anti-shading Vs 250 Renogy Bifacial Solar Panels on My Boat Review

One of the biggest changes I want to make is moving away from butane gas for cooking. Refill costs for gas bottles seem to rise every year, and finding replacement cylinders can sometimes be a challenge. Instead, I'd much rather cook with an air fryer and an induction hob. They're cleaner, more convenient, and better suited to how I like to cook. The downside, of course, is that they require a significant amount of electricity, and that energy has to come from somewhere.

To help meet those growing power demands, I've decided to install a Renogy ShadowFlux 200W solar panel on the deck in front of the sprayhood—an area that's often affected by shading. To maximise solar generation, my long-term plan is to fit a stainless steel arch carrying two Renogy N-Type 16BB 250W bifacial solar panels.

Since I'm still saving for the arch, I thought it would be a great opportunity to test the panels first and see how they perform in real-world conditions. I'm particularly interested in comparing their output and understanding just how much of a difference they'll make before committing to the full installation.

Looking further ahead, I also have another dream project in mind: buying a van and converting it into a home on wheels. Combining my love of sailing with #VanLife sounds like the perfect way to enjoy the freedom of exploring both the sea and the open road.


I wired the ShadowFlux panel into one of my Victon 100/20 MPPT solar charge controller. and wired the other bifacial into my other Victon 100/20 MPPT solar charge as I have 2 on my boat.

Yes I know they currently look silly! For the test they were the same angle. The one on the left is now in front of the spray hood. They Bifacials I put on a hinge to be able to pack them away.

Understanding the Panels (Titles are Amazon Links for full spec)



The ShadowFlux panel is designed specifically for areas with partial shading. It uses N-Type solar cells with anti-shading technology, which helps maintain power output even when parts of the panel are shaded. This makes it ideal for locations like the deck near the spray hood, where sails, rigging, or the boat’s structure can cast shadows.



The bifacial panel captures sunlight on both sides, increasing energy production by using reflected light from surfaces like the boat’s arch or deck. It features 16 busbars (16BB) for better current collection and improved efficiency. These panels are larger and more powerful, making them suitable for the arch where there is more direct sunlight and less shading.



Renogy bifacial solar panels will eventuyally be mounted on my boat a Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 40, capturing sunlight from both sides. It's over £25 per meter so will take a little while to save up I estimate the job to cost around £1,000



Installation and Placement


Installing the ShadowFlux panel on the deck was straightforward. Its slim profile and flexible design made it easy to fit in front of the spray hood without interfering with movement or visibility. The anti-shading technology gives peace of mind in this tricky spot where shadows from sails and rigging are common.


The bifacial panels required a sturdier mounting solution on the arch. I will use the 316 mirror polished 2mm thick poles along with bimini fittings. I have a friend who made one this way and he sailed from UK to Africa no problem. Once installed, the panels will have more of a clean, professional look and were positioned to maximize exposure to sunlight from above and reflected light from below. Which I will get an extra boost from the water and the white deck reflecting the sun.



Performance in Real Conditions


Power Output

The bifacial panels consistently produced more power than the ShadowFlux panel, as expected given their higher wattage rating. On sunny days, each 250W bifacial panel delivered close to its rated output. While testing in July 2026 we have had a beautiful heat wave of a whole week of sun. Usually when I make it to the boat it's raining side ways! So a very nice change!


The ShadowFlux panel produced less power overall but maintained a steady output even when shadows fell across part of the panel. In contrast, My previous panel the Renogy 175w panel without anti-shading technology would had significant drop in power under the same conditions. Which is why I changed the panel out with the shadowflux panel.


Shading Tolerance


The ShadowFlux panel’s anti-shading cells proved their worth. Even when rigging or sails cast shadows, the panel’s output dipped slightly. But the panel out performed the previous 175w panel that was infront of the sprey hood. For my set up the flexible solar panel on the sprey hood and the ShadowFlux are wired into series (voltage added up) and into one of my MPPT


The bifacial panels performed best overall in full sun and when parcially shaded.



Durability and Weather Resistance


Both panels are built for marine environments, with corrosion-resistant frames and tempered glass. The aluminium is 1.1mm thick and seems very sturdy. I will reinforce the attachments for the solar arch with the frame. I think ill buy plastic strips to give additional support.

Which Panel Fits Your Needs?


Choosing between these two panels depends on your boat’s layout and where you plan to install them.


  • Use ShadowFlux 200W if you have shaded areas where sails, rigging, or other structures block sunlight. Its anti-shading technology keeps power flowing even in tricky spots.

  • Choose bifacial 250W panels for open, sunny locations like the arch or other elevated spots with minimal shading. Their ability to capture reflected light boosts total energy production.


On my Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 40, this combination works well. The ShadowFlux panel handles the shaded deck area efficiently, while the bifacial panels on the arch deliver strong power output in full sun.



Final Thoughts on Solar Panels for Sailing Boats


Installing solar panels on a sailing boat requires balancing power needs with the realities of shading and space constraints. The Renogy ShadowFlux 200W and the Renogy N-Type 16BB 250W bifacial panels each have strengths that suit different parts of the boat.


By mixing these technologies, I achieved a reliable, efficient solar setup that keeps my boat powered during long trips. If you’re planning a similar installation, consider where shading occurs and how much space you have. This approach will help you get the most from your solar investment.
